Heungkuk Life took the lead in women’s volleyball behind the precision bombing of Kim Yeon-kyung and Yelena Mrazenovic (registered name Yelena).
Heungkuk Life swept GS Caltex with a set score of 3-0 (25-22 26-24 25-23) in the women’s visiting match of the Professional Volleyball Dodram 2023-2024 V-League at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul on Nov. 31.
Heungkuk Life, which suffered its first loss of the season in the previous match on Sept. 29, when it led 2-0 before falling 2-3, shook off the shock of the upset in two days.
With the three additional points, Heungkuk Life moved to the top of the standings with a 4-1-1 record and 12 points, pushing Hyundai E&C (3-2-1, 10 points) to second place.
Kim Yeon-kyung and Yelena led the way for Heungkuk Life, combining for 37 points in the win.
Kim finished with 18 points, while Yelena added 19 points.
The two players were especially responsible for the offense, committing only three errors, two by Yelena and one by Kim, giving off the scent of ‘volleyball masters’.
GS Caltex was led by Giselle Silva (real name Silva), who scored a team-high 19 points, but was unable to fulfill her role as the main gun as she committed a whopping 12 errors.
Heungkuk Life took advantage of the “concentration after 20 points” in the first set.
At 20-21, they tied the score with an attack by Kim Yeon-kyung and then took the lead with an attack error by GS Caltex’s Yoo Seo-yeon.
At 22-22, Yelena and Kim Mi-yeon scored back-to-back points to neutralize the opponent’s defense, and at 24-22 set point, Do Soo-bin’s dig after a hard hit by Silva landed in an empty GS Caltex court.
In the second set, Heungkuk Life also fought back after the 20th point.
At 21-22, Kim Yeon-kyung intercepted Silva’s attack to tie the score, and Park Soo-yeon, who came in as the one-point server, served an ace.
At 24-24 deuce, Kim’s staggered attack hit the state court, and Reina Tokoku (registered name Reina) blocked Silva’s back-attack to clinch the second set.
Heungkuk Life kept the momentum going and took a two-point lead at 20-20 in the third set with a kill by Yelena and a block by Kim Soo-ji, and Kim Yeon-kyung scored the final 25 points.
