Kiwoom Jang Jae-young falters in ⅔ inning until headshot ejection

Jang Jae-young, 30th Samsung Electronics ⅔ inning, 6 runs on 6 hits, 6 walks

Kiwoom Heroes’ Jang Jae-young (21) was ejected for a head shot after taking six pitches.

Jang Jae-young started against the Samsung Lions of the 2023 Shinhan Bank Solar KBO League at the Gocheok SkyDome on March 30, but left the mound without completing the first inning.

After retiring the first batter, Kim Hyun-jun, on a fly ball to center field in the top of the first inning, Jang started to falter after a surprise bunt single by Kim Sung-yoon.

After throwing three pitches in a row to Guzauk at first base, he threw a fourth pitch that hit him in the body. With runners on first and second, he gave up back-to-back singles to Minho Kang and Jose Pirela to load the bases.

After giving up another run on a walk, Jang Jae-young walked Kang to load the bases.

With the bases loaded again, Jang struck out Kim Dong-jin to end the inning, but his woes were far from over. With the bases loaded, he battled Ryu Ji-hyuk for seven pitches, but gave up another pushing double.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Jang Jae-young threw a fastball to Kim Ji-chan that was aimed at the head. Under the head shot rule, which is an automatic ejection when a fastball hits the head, Jang was immediately ordered out. It was his eighth headshot ejection of the season.

After ⅔ of an inning with one hit, four walks and two balls hit to the body, Jang Jae-young’s deficit grew to “six” when Ha Young-min, 스포츠토토 who took over the mound, hit a double off the first batter, Kim Hyun-joon.

The six walks in an inning are tied for the second-most in history.

The previous record was set by Ariel Miranda (Doosan) on June 25 last year, when he gave up seven in the first inning against the KIA Tigers.
