Manchester United “legend” Wayne Rooney seems to be in a bad way as a manager.
Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle fell to a 0-4 defeat against Sheffield United in the first round of the 2024-25 English Football League Championship (Second Division) at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England, at 12:00 a.m. ET.
Plymouth opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Jamal Lowe. They added a second seven minutes into the second half through Brandon Galloway’s own goal, before conceding two more in stoppage time through Josh Windass and Michael Smith.
Rooney is a former England player-manager. During his career, he played as both a frontline striker and a second striker. In his prime, he was a versatile player with power, skill, strength, and physicality. His trademark was his aggressive ‘dribbling through the middle’.
A former Everton youth player, Rooney made his professional debut in 2002 before moving to Manchester United in 2004. He spent the next 13 years at United, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. In total, Rooney won 17 trophies with United, including the UEFA Champions League.
After 13 years at United, Rooney moved to his “home team” Everton and then to the MLS in the United States. After a spell with DC United, he moved to Derby County, where he began his coaching career as a playing coach. He then became acting head coach in the 2020-21 season.
Once in charge, Rooney was unable to prevent Derby’s relegation. He 안전놀이터 eventually left Derby to take over at DC United. During his time in charge of DC United, Rooney made a surprise appointment at Birmingham City. At Birmingham, Rooney was tasked with staying put.
Rooney’s Birmingham, however, completely collapsed. With a disastrous record of two wins, four draws, and nine losses in 15 games, Birmingham dropped from sixth to 20th place, and Rooney was sacked by the club. Even after Baek’s arrival, Birmingham fell one point short of the title at the end of the season and were relegated to the third tier for the first time in 29 years.
Rooney took over as Plymouth’s new manager ahead of this season. However, from his first game, the team suffered a crushing defeat. Plymouth fans are slowly becoming worried about their team”s relegation. Rooney”s terrible results as Birmingham manager snowballed and Birmingham dropped to the third division.
The interview was even worse. After the game, Rooney said, “If he plays like this again, I won’t put him on the pitch again. From my point of view, you can lose a football match, but you have to do the basics. You have to run, you have to tackle, you have to hold onto the ball, and we didn’t do that,” he said.
“They know they have to do that every game. I warned the players after the game that if I see that kind of play again, whether they’ve been at the club for a long time or are new, I won’t put them in the game. It’s the first game of the season, so of course we’re disappointed.”
